Hiring rebounds in April with 211,000 new jobs – The Labor Department reported that U.S. employer’s added 211,000 new jobs in April. Stocks up for week – Stock markets rose this week as tech companies reported first quarter earnings that beat expectations. The tech heavy NASDAQ is up 13% for the year. The DOW and S&P are also up 6.3% and 7.2% respectively year to date. They barely moved this week as they were held back by energy companies that dropped on falling oil prices, disappointing results from big retailers, and auto stocks that dropped following fewer auto sales in April. The April jobs report caused stocks to rally Friday and end the week higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the week at 21,006.94, up from 20,940.51 last week. The S&P 500 closed the week at 2,399.29, up from its close last week of 2,384.20. The NASDAQ closed the week at 6,100.76, up from last week’s close of 6,047.71. Mortgage Rates lower in April – Mortgage rates dropped to a 5 month low in April. The May 3, 2017 Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that the 30 year fixed mortgage rate average was 4.02%, almost unchanged from 4.03% on April 27, 2017. The 15 year fixed was 3.27%, unchanged from last week’s close. The 5-year ARM was 3.13%, also almost unchanged from 3.12% last week. Author, Syd Leibovitch

In January it was announced that the Lucas Museum for Narrative Art had selected Los Angeles’ Exposition Park as its future home. Preliminary renderings of the museum detailed a futuristic curving-wing shape, designed by Chinese architect Ma Yansong. Now, updated renderings of the museum have been released. The 115-foot museum will take over two city-owned surface parking lots between Bill Robertson Lane and Vermont Boulevard on the western edge of the park. According to Urbanize LA, the $1 billion museum will start as two separate wings at ground level, and ultimately merge higher up. The south wing’s ground-floor would house the museum’s archive, with offices, classrooms and a library located above. The two wings would merge at the fourth floor above ground, which is intended to be the museum’s primary exhibition space.
Finally, the fifth level would feature additional exhibition space, in addition to a sit-down restaurant flanked by a public roof garden. “In a city that’s known for its bold architectural statements, this would be an incredible addition to our civic landscape,” Mayor Eric Garcetti told LAist in October. “I think it’s the capstone of an amazing park which has come alive. For one end of the park to have the imagination, and the other end to have the incarnation of that imagination with the Science Center would be a beautiful thing for the city.” No plans for a thermal exhaust port, luckily. Construction on the museum is set to begin in January and finish within 36 months. Article courtesy of LAist. Los Angeles provides no limit of things to do, some awesome and some not so awesome. The California Department of Finance has released its annual state population report. The Golden State added 335,000 people in 2016, bringing our total population, as of January 1, 2017, to 39,524,000. The department projects that the state will cross the 40 million threshold “sometime in 2018,” Bill Schooling, chief of the Demographic Research Unit at the department, told LAist.
How did Los Angeles fare? California’s largest city added about 42,000 people (a 1.1 percent gain for the year), bringing our population to 4,041,707 on January 1. Southern California also listed five of the 10 fastest growing cities with populations of 30,000 or more. Irvine’s population grew by 3.9% (to 267,086) from January 1, 2016, to January 1, 2017. Beaumont grew by 3% during the same period. As did Vista, Monrovia, and Santa Clarita. “Irvine saw big growth due to [single and multi-family] housing construction,” Schooling continued. “The Inland Empire, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, saw a return to growth as well.” Schooling also noted that the state now has 14 million housing units—the most in California history. “We’re seeing an uptick in housing construction across the state. The most since prior to the recession,” Schooling said. But that is not to suggest that L.A.’s (and California’s) housing shortage is quenched. “Long term, the average in housing growth versus population growth is inadequate.” Another interesting bit of information from the report: Amador County, which saw the largest percentage population gain, and Kings County, which saw one of the largest population decreases, experienced a prison expansion and closure, respectively.
